Pre-surgery rehabilitation, also known as prehabilitation, is a type of physical therapy that is performed before a surgical procedure. The goal of prehabilitation is to improve the patient's physical condition and prepare them for the surgery and recovery process. This can include exercises to improve strength, range of motion, and flexibility, as well as education on proper posture and body mechanics to prevent injury and promote healing.
Post-surgery rehabilitation, also known as postoperative rehabilitation, is a type of physical therapy that is performed after a surgical procedure. The goal of postoperative rehabilitation is to help the patient recover from the surgery, regain strength and range of motion, and return to normal activities as soon as possible. This can include exercises to improve strength, range of motion, and flexibility, as well as education on proper posture and body mechanics to prevent injury and promote healing.
Both pre and post surgery rehab may include modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, ice and heat therapy and manual therapy to aid in the healing process.
It is important to note that both prehabilitation and postoperative rehabilitation are typically prescribed and overseen by a physician or surgeon in conjunction with a licensed physical therapist.
